Wishing my friends and collectors from all sides of the political spectrum peace, love and joy in 2025.
Just Friends, Acrylic on canvas, 36" x 48", Charles Sherman, 2024
This political cartoon Just Friends portrays an intriguing image of Barack Obama and Donald Trump, often seen as emblematic leaders of the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively.
Many supporters of both leaders are seen by their followers as larger-than- life, charismatic personas, almost mythological in their influence and appeal. Their policies and leadership styles inspire deep admiration and loyalty, with some even attributing a near-reverential, "messianic" quality to their role in shaping America.
Some detractors of each leader often view the other in extreme terms, painting them as harmful, malevolent or even satanic figures. This reflects how deeply polarized perspectives can be, with each side vilifying the leader they oppose.
What’s striking about this artwork is the emotion it evokes. Through their body language, the two men appear to share a moment of joy, mutual admiration, and respect.
My intention with this cartoon is to encourage individuals from opposite sides of the political spectrum to recognize each other’s humanity. In doing so, perhaps we can foster dialogue, build bridges, and begin to heal the deep divisions that polarize our nation.
